How you choose to treat wrinkles and other signs of aging depends on what stage of your life you’re at. In your 20s, when wrinkles are just beginning to appear, sunblock is the best course of action. At that stage, skin can still repair itself, and wearing sunscreen regularly will prevent further damage and help the skin regenerate itself. An alpha-hydroxy acid product is also a good idea, because it will lightly exfoliate the dulling layer of dead skin and give it a smoother, clearer look.

When your 30s start to creep up (with a few more lines and wrinkles in tow), retinol products and prescription retinoids, such as Retin-A or Renova (the more moisturizing form), are the next line of defense. Both are designed to plump up fine lines and stimulate skin to produce collagen, although Renova is the only product approved by the FDA clinically proven to reduce wrinkles. If your skin is starting to show signs of dryness, moisturizer will hydrate it and make wrinkles look less apparent but won’t make them disappear.

When wrinkles become stubborn, usually around your late 30s and early 40s, it’s time to see your dermatologist, who can prescribe a skincare regimen to help keep wrinkles at bay. In addition, she has various chemical peels in her anti-aging arsenal. Peels come in varying strengths, depending on the severity of your wrinkles and age spots. Light, glycolic acid-based peels, done once a month over the course of a few months, will help smooth some of the fine lines (although they won’t have much effect on deep wrinkles), fade brown spots, and even out overall skin tone.

TCA (trichloracetic acid) peels are a bit stronger and reserved for deeper wrinkles. They are used at varying concentrations and leave skin red and sensitive for a few days. Phenol peels are used for very severe discoloration as a last resort. The downsides of phenol peels are that they can leave the skin permanently lighter and involve more risks than more gentle peels.

Laser peels are a newer weapon that only require a single treatment but are reserved for very severe wrinkling. Depending on the type of damage you wish to get rid of, this could be an alternative to a facelift and should be performed only by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon who has substantial experience using lasers. The additional drawback is the healing process; count on severe redness and peeling for at least a week.

CLEAN!

Get Glowing! Wash your face with a gentle, oil- and fragrance-free cleanser; preferably a nondetergent one labeled pH balanced.
If you have oily skin all over your face, use a cleanser that contains benzoil peroxide or salicylic acid. Don’t scrub – irritated skin swells around the pores, which can cause breakouts. Skip toner unless your face is very oily, otherwise it might dry out the skin.

TREAT!

Apply a topical acne treatment containing benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid over your entire face, not just where blemishes have already erupted. At night, use a drying spot-treatment product and dab oil-free moisturizer on dry areas. In the morning, apply an oil-free sunscreen gel over the entire face.

CONCEAL!

Use a small makeup brush to dab concealer or cream foundation (in the exact same shade as your skin) directly onto the blemish. Use a fingertip to wipe away excess concealer around the blemish and, if necessary, apply another coat of concealer. If the makeup becomes cakey, carefully wipe it off and start over. gently brush powder (in the exact same shade as your skin) on top of the concealer.

Tricks Of The Trade:

If you have oily skin and feel that you need toner, apply it only on the T-zone, and rinse it off afterward (leaving it on can dry the skin). Use a clay mask as often as every three days to absorb excess oil.

To stop redness and swelling in an emergency situation (job interview, wedding), ask your doctor for a cortisone injection. It calms down a pimple almost instantly.

If you can’t get to your dermatologist (or needles make you squemish), temporarily reduce redness and swelling by dabbing on a drop of drugstore cortisone cream, Preparation H, or Vasocon-A eyedrops.

Step-by-step tips to get gorgeous skin:

Don’t go to bed with makeup on.
Makeup left on overnight seeps into your pores, clogs them, and congests your skin. Make sure that you wash your face twice at the end of the day. Once to get the makeup off. A second time to wash the skin itself.

Exfoliate daily.
After washing your face at night, be sure to exfoliate. Use a delicate scrub. If you don’t have one on hand, a tablespoon of sugar or oatmeal will work just fine.

Use facial masks regularly.
If possible, everyday is ideal. Again, if you don’t have one on hand, make your own. Mashed banana or avocado is good. Plain yogurt also works well.

Keep a treatment and moisturizer on your face, day or night.
Put your skin first. After you wash it at night, put on some kind of skin treatment, whether it’s alpha hydroxy acids, vitamin A or C, or any kind of special cocktail treatment. Let that sink in, then put a moisturizer over that. In the morning, do the same.

Don’t use the cheapest or most expensive cosmetics.
Moderately priced cosmetics are the best. They get the job done, and the ingredients are usually pretty good. You have to keep trying various brands until you find something that works well for you.

Hydrate your face throughout the day.
Whether it’s a commercial product, or one you make yourself (fill a spray bottle with distilled water, add a few drops of chamomile or rose essential oil, shake it gently before each use, and spray it on) hydrate your face, even over makeup, frequently throughout the day.

Treat your face gently.
Never pull, tug, or scrub your facial skin. Be very gentle when you clean it, moisturize it or makeup on it. This will lessen the chance that you’ll damage your skin and get wrinkles.

Keep your face covered when you’re in the sun.
Slather on a high factor sunscreen, put on sunglasses, and a wide brimmed hat.

Eat fresh foods and drink lots of water.
Stay away from “dead food” food that’s basically not fresh. Eat lots of veggies, fruits, nuts, and drinks tons of water.

Let go of stress.
Stress can show up on your face, no matter how well you take care of your skin. Do something your enjoy everyday, whether it’s watching TV or going shopping. Your face reflects what’s going on inside of your mind.

Wrinkles may be an inevitable part of aging, but that doesn’t mean fighting them is useless. Protecting your skin from exposure to ultraviolet radiation is the most significant thing you can do to prevent wrinkles, sagging, and discoloration. Some people try invasive techniques, such as chemical peels, Botox, dermal fillers, or surgery. But those efforts are all done from the outside. What about protecting your skin from the inside?

Researchers from Australia, Greece and Sweden, led by Martalena br Purba of Monash University, Melbourne, studied 450 people aged 70 or more to see if there was a link between how wrinkly they were and what they ate. They found that those who ate mainly vegetables, olive oil, fish, legumes, low-fat milk products and tea were the least wrinkled.

Based on the research findings, here’s a comprehensive list of what you should eat and drink to protect yourself against wrinkles:

Green leafy vegetables

Vegetables especially spinach, eggplant, asparagus, celery, onions, leeks, andgarlic

Vegetable juice

Water and tea

Legumes especially broad beans and lima beans

Fruit especially cherries, grapes, melon, apple, prunes, pears, fruit salad, dried fruits

Olive oil, and other monounsaturated fats including nuts and olives

Polyunsaturated oil

Yogurt

Cheese

Sardines

Eggs

Multigrain bread

The magic ingredients for protecting against wrinkles seem to be monounsaturated fat, vitamin C,retinol, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and zinc.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to neutralize free radicals, the unstable oxygen

molecules produced by pollution, stress and sun. Free radicals attack healthy skin cells and cause collagen breakdown, all of which lead to wrinkles. Antioxidants — found in green tea, vitamins C and E, and coenzyme Q10 — work together to neutralize free radicals.

Vitamin A is one of the fat-soluble vitamins and retinol is one of its most active forms. Retinol is required for growth and reproduction of the skin, and differentiation of epithelial tissue. This is important because your skin ages over time and the results are wrinkles, rough texture, discolorations, and thinning. Retinol is an essential fat-soluble vitamin that is used to combat these negative effects and promote healthy skin. This vitamin is found in animal foods such as liver and eggs and in some fortified food products.

Iron helps bring oxygen to the skin thus giving your skin enough air to breathe, while zinc promotes cell repair and growth, and is a key member of a group of enzymes that helps to maintain collagen supply. Without zinc, the enzymes that rebuild new collagen do not function properly.

The researchers concluded that people with the most wrinkles lunched on full-fat dairy foods, butter, margarine, red meat, soft drinks, cakes and pastries.

A variety of culprits are to blame for bone-dry skin. Environmental elements like chilly, windy weather and UV rays can dry out the skin. So can the many things associated with summer like salt water and chlorine. Skin also naturally gets drier with age. Thankfully, even though it might sound like your skin has many moisture-zapping culprits to contend with, there are simple and effective ways to help your skin retain moisture. Here are 11 of the easiest and most effective.

Hold off on hot showers. Hot water is a hydration-zapper. Plus, not only does it leave skin dry, but it can make it dull and itchy. That’s why when washing your hands and body, use lukewarm water, which doesn’t steal moisture from the skin like hot water.

If you love your hot showers, just try to shorten them to about five to 10 minutes tops. Also, avoid hot tubs. According to About’s beauty guide, Julyne Derrick, the super-hot temps and chemicals are “torture on dry skin.”

Say buh-bye to bath bubbles. Bath bubbles often contain harsh ingredients that irritate all skin types, especially anyone with sensitive skin. Instead, consider bath oils or oatmeal formulas. Oatmeal, in particular, is soothing. Try out this recipe from AltUse the next time you’re taking a bath: Into your bath, pour one cup of milk, two cups of uncooked oatmeal and 1 tablespoon of honey. Again, make sure the water is lukewarm. You can soak for 10 to 20 minutes.

Forgo fragrance. Soaps and cleansers with fragrance can dry out and even irritate the skin. Instead, find moisturizing formulas, which aren’t just gentler on the skin but also contain emollients and humectants to boost hydration. When buying cleansers and washes, look for “the emollient glycerin and humectants such as petrolatum, sunflower oil, and soybean oil,” according to WebMD.

Skip foaming skin care, too. If you already have dry skin, avoid cleansers or body washes that foam. According to dermatologist Baumann, M.D., on her Yahoo! Health blog, The Skin Guru, foaming formulas “can remove more of your skin’s valuable lipids and impair its natural ability to hydrate.” She also suggests evaluating your kitchen products and laundry detergent. You can find detergent that’s designed for sensitive skin or even make your own.

Look for exfoliating and hydrating ingredients. Salicylic acid and alpha hydroxy acids are super-stars when it comes to removing dead skin cells and revealing smoother, softer skin. These ingredients are effective for removing rough spots on the skin. However, keep in mind that salicylic and alpha hydroxy acids increase sun sensitivity, so be extra diligent with your sun protection. For added hydration, seek out products with glycerin or ceramides.

Moisturize within minutes. Since moisturizers help your skin retain moisture — and don’t actually provide it — it’s key to apply them immediately after showering, bathing or washing your hands. In fact, applying moisturizer to dry skin is pointless. So, as a rule, slather on moisturizer to damp skin within three minutes.

Dry-brush the skin. To boost exfoliation and bust dead skin build-up, brush your skin before taking a shower. This helps to remove flakes. Any kind of brush just won’t do. Look for a brush with natural bristles and a long, removable handle. You can probably find a brush for as little as $5.

Shave away. Aside from removing unwanted hair, shaving also acts like an exfoliant. It sloughs off a layer of dead skin cells, uncovering the newer, softer skin cells beneath. Just be sure not to dry shave, and use hydrating shaving creams. Shaving is actually one of the reasons men’s skin tends to look younger: By shaving, they regularly remove dead skin from their faces.

Cover up. Since the sun sucks out moisture big-time, damages collagen and creates free radicals — thereby causing premature aging and preventing supple skin — apply sunscreen regularly to all exposed areas. You can also cover your skin with clothing that contains sun protection. Just look for clothes that have an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF). When doing housework, always wear gloves to protect your hands from harsh cleaning products. Also, wear gloves when you garden, and when it’s cold out to protect your skin from cracking and peeling.

Re-assess your skin type. Since your skin changes with age — it gets drier and less supple — and with the seasons — both cold and hot seasons can dry out the skin — it’s important to reevaluate your skincare routine regularly. You might need to get creams, instead of lotions, or skip your toner when it gets cold.

Pay attention to potentially drying products. The products you’re using can also dry out your skin. For instance, retinol formulas and prescription-strength retinoids can be very drying. While you shouldn’t stop using these formulas — they’re incredibly effective — you might want to seek out moisturizing, gentle products. Consider using a mild cleanser and a more hydrating moisturizer with antioxidants. According to Derrick, who uses the retinoid Retin-A, this facial moisturizer is “creamy, goes on smoothly and makes [her] skin glowy and moist all day long.” Here’s more on why retinol andretinoids are such powerful anti-aging — and acne-fighting — ingredients.

There’s no one secret behind soft, smooth skin. To get hydrated skin from head to toe, just follow the above healthy habits and incorporate moisture-boosting and exfoliating formulas into your routine.

Why do you leave certain steps out of your beauty routine? Running late? Think the additional time and effort aren’t worth it? Before cutting down your beauty routine, remember that spending a few extra minutes on these simple steps can really make a difference in how your skin looks and feels.

Skipped step 1: Slathering on sunscreen

Why we skip it:

We think we’re safe from the sun’s rays when we’re indoors.

We think all sunscreens are thick, greasy and irritating to skin.

We assume that naturally dark skin won’t burn.

Why we should do it:
First, UVA rays still come through glass and windows, says dermatologist Heather Woolery-Lloyd, M.D., in Real Simple. UVA rays are a major cause of skin aging, wrinkles, dryness, discoloration and can also lead to skin cancer. So even indoors, sunscreen is a must.

Second, there’s no reason to worry about greasy products or skin irritation. There are many types of sunscreens. Newer formulas are lighter and more easily absorbed by the skin. Spray-on sunscreens or sunscreen towelettes might be good options for you. Plus, you can choose formulas with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are ideal for sensitive, irritation-prone skin.

Dark-skinned people are vulnerable to sun damage, too. And regardless of your skin tone, sun exposure still puts you at risk for skin cancer — particularly melanoma, which can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated early. Also, keep in mind that UVB rays are associated with sunburn and skin cancer.

For the best protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises using a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day. Be sure the label says “broad-spectrum,” which means that the sunscreen protects you from both types of rays. Slather it on “30 minutes before going into the sun. Then reapply every two hours or immediately after sweating, swimming or drying off with a towel,” writes Nancy Rones in Redbook. Again, look for formulas with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are gentler to skin than chemicals like PABA or avobenzone. Choose a sunscreen designed for your skin type.

Skipped step 2: Conditioning hair

Why we skip it:

We think our hair is safe from damage and doesn’t need conditioning, especially if we don’t color or chemically treat it.

We don’t have extra time in the morning to apply conditioner after shampooing.

We believe conditioner will weigh hair down and make it greasy.

Why we should do it:
In healthy hair, the cuticle (the hair strand is covered by the cuticle) is smooth and light easily reflects off, so hair looks shiny. Unfortunately, chemical processes (like perming, coloring or relaxing) and heat styling tools (like blow-dryers, curling irons or flat irons) make the hair cuticle rough, damaged and dull.

Conditioner coats your strands, leaving behind a thin film to protect the cuticle from moisture loss, harsh chemical treatments and styling damage. The protected cuticle becomes smooth and reflects light, leaving luminous locks.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to leave conditioner in your hair for a long period of time for it to work, according to The Beauty Brains. Why? Conditioner’s beneficial effects simply come from coating your hair, not from how long you leave it in. “Once you’ve got the conditioner worked through your hair, it works almost instantly. Letting it ‘soak in’ longer doesn’t improve the way it works,” they say. But the key is making sure you distribute the conditioner through your hair evenly. Concentrate on the ends, which tend to be dry and damaged.

Finally, to avoid greasy, limp, weighed-down hair, don’t apply conditioner near the scalp or roots. This area tends to be oilier than the rest of the hair. Also, thoroughly rinse out your conditioner. And because various types of conditioners offer different benefits, choose one suited for your hair’s specific needs.

Skipped step 3: Exfoliating skin

Why we skip it:

We think skin’s natural cell renewal process automatically removes dead cells and replaces them with new, healthy ones — so no extra work is needed on our part.

We assume that exfoliation can irritate or damage skin.

Why we should do it:

“Exfoliation is the removal of the oldest dead skin cells that cling to the skin’s outermost surface,” explains Anitra Brown, a licensed esthetician and spa guide for the Web site About. This can be done mechanically or chemically:

Mechanical exfoliation uses scrubs with abrasive sugars, salts, ground nut shells or beads. It can also be done with a sponge, washcloth or buffing brush. These tools are great for the body, but may be too rough for your face.

Chemical exfoliation uses acid-based scrubs, with alpha hydroxy acids like glycolic acid, or beta hydroxy acids like salicylic acid. These chemicals “loosen the glue-like substance that holds the cells together, allowing them to slough away,” Brown writes.

As we age, the cellular turnover process slows, and dead skin cells don’t shed as easily. Instead, they accumulate on the skin’s surface, making our complexion look dull and feel rough. Got oily skin? Oil acts as a glue that prevents dead skin cells from being shed, according to Health. So exfoliation is necessary to keep your skin looking fresh and feeling smooth.

Another reason to exfoliate? Built-up dead skin cells form a barrier, preventing other skincare products or treatments from penetrating the skin. Therefore, these products don’t work as effectively, greatly reducing their potential benefits. Exfoliation “allows products to penetrate better,” dermatologist Harold Lancer, M.D., tells Health. In turn, better product penetration may lead to better results and better-looking skin.

However, over-exfoliation can be irritating, especially for dry or sensitive skin. It can also make your skin more vulnerable to sunburn or sun damage. Exfoliate twice weekly to maintain smooth skin, or more often if your skin is oily.

Skipped step 4: Using makeup primer

Why we skip it:

We don’t have time to add an extra step to our makeup routine.

We think our makeup will stay put and not wear off.

We think makeup primer may accentuate flaws.

Why we should do it:

You probably rarely do without primer before painting a wall or any other surface. Primer fills in uneven cracks so paint goes on smoothly and adheres to the surface. The same concept holds true for makeup primer — it fills in and hides any lines, wrinkles or pores, creating a smooth facial surface.

As a result, your makeup looks better, is easier to apply and lasts longer. Spending an extra minute on this simple step can prevent you from needing to re-apply makeup later, so it actually saves you time.

Primer is great for all skin types:

Oily skin. You’re probably all too familiar with your makeup sliding off. Primer “provides a barrier between the skin’s oils and your makeup, so foundation lasts longer,” explains Jennifer Tung in InStyle Getting Gorgeous.

Dry skin. Primer adds an extra layer of hydration, so foundation stays on your skin’s surface instead of being absorbed and vanishing into dry areas.

Sensitive skin. Some primers contain botanical ingredients — such as aloe, honey, green tea or fruit extracts — to calm inflammation or redness and protect against environmental damage.

Skipped step 5: Applying basecoat and topcoat

Why we skip it:

We’re running short on time.

We think these products won’t make a difference in a manicure’s appearance.

Why we should do it:

Applying both basecoat and topcoat does make a big difference in your manicure! Specifically, basecoat acts like glue, providing an even surface and helping nail polish stick to your nails.

Plus, it’s an absolute must if your nails are weak, brittle, dry, damaged or have uneven ridges. A hydrating basecoat “will prevent air bubbles from forming under the polish and stop flaking – which is important, as flaking polish takes nail cells with it, increasing damage,” writes Helen Foster in The Beauty Book. Basecoat also prevents very bright or super-dark polish shades from discoloring and staining your nails. Just be sure to let your basecoat dry before you apply your polish.

Once you’ve painted on your basecoat and polish, topcoat can speed up the drying process. It also creates a glossy shine and protects polish from chipping or peeling, so your color stays on longer. Got long nails? Add topcoat across the tip and underside of your nails for extra protection.

While you might think you’re wasting minutes on the above steps, you’re really saving time — and your skin in many cases. So be sure to smear on the sunscreen, coat your strands in conditioner, slough off old skin with a scrub, apply smoothing makeup primer and paint on basecoat and topcoat. You’ll be glad that you did!
